About five and a half years ago when I started to deep dive into learning about executive functioning I checked out every book that was available at the time. As I looked through the various worksheets and strategies (checklists, timers) in these books I thought to myself, "𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘴." More importantly, they didn't address the struggles that cause the most stress for the families I work with.
It was during this time I given an article about declarative language by Linda. What I read in this article resonated more than all of the books I had checked out. Linda was describing what I tried to do with my son. (I never knew there was a name for it, not to mention that I really wasn't doing it correctly much of the time.) Here's what struck me the most about Linda's article: 𝘐𝘯 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘻𝘦𝘳𝘰 𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘴, 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺. This was groundbreaking stuff that I had never seen anywhere in the ADHD literature.
Since that time Linda's work has been one of the biggest influences on what I teach kids and parents. If you've watched any of the webinars in Executive Function Crash Course you have seen Linda's influence on the work I do. If you've watched any of lessons I teach during Summer Trip Camp you have as well.
Linda's new book, the 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 can improve life at home for every family of a kid with ADHD.
Last night, I spoke with Linda on the phone and felt like I learned more in 40 minutes than I did in the 20+ hours I recently spent on an ADHD certification course.
Join us tomorrow for an ADHD Dude live at the ADHD Dude YouTube channel. Linda will help you understand how to use declarative language to help your child. One of the things that resonated the most about my conversation with Linda yesterday was her focus on parent-child communication and the relationship over behavior modification. This is truly groundbreaking stuff that you don't want to miss.
